Until September 18 this year, the main theme for this website will be “what is possible with open source”… considering it’s a platform that’s spreading it’s tentacles into a variety of different spheres on the planet- like for instance Gov2.0. Fair enough, this enquiry could be biased considering it is coming from somebody on Melbourne’s 2010 Software Freedom Day committee (State Library Victoria – put it in your diary), somebody who last year switched to Linux (from that other soft ware)… I can now authentically compare open to closed source on yet another level. The first being from a range of closed source corporations training me to do things their way or the highway. Well, actually my very first experience was from a mother intent on passing down a “this is the way it’s always been, so this is the way it’s going” mentality, an inherited thinking guaranteed to keep same old same old patterns in place.
From these claims already you may get a sense of the scope for this enquiry into open source… the whole idea of people creating, designing, formulating code and creating systems that produce results for the whole community has far reaching possibilities. Perhaps there is zero coincidence that two global headlines currently run parallel with the expansion of Open Source, two serious issues demonstrating the frustration and ineffectiveness of closed, controlled, and in many ways, powerless, sources.
As two major global corporations try desperately to cover their tracks and close the lids on potently toxic black substances… people committed to open source forge ahead freeing information for future generations. I propose that both of these leaks affect EVERYbody, if not immediately, then at some time in the future the repercussions of these leaks will eventually reach each and every man, woman and child living on the planet. Well, no, on second thoughts, they DO now impact everybody who has these issues in their awareness, considering that the mere absorption of information soaks into our cells does make an impact – What The Bleep Do We Know quantum physically delves into this theory a little deeper).
From that context I declare that Open Source IS a viable remedy for creating solutions to global issues, and Open Source makes global enquiry possible at all levels. This page is dedicated to information that forwards the possibility that Open Source is, to give you, the reader an idea of just how powerful the structure of OS really is. Read on, absorb and make your own enquiries – ask questions, get to the source of where your hardware and software derives, you might be surprised.
I’m on a mission to discover: how the open source community exists, what the core values are, how far the virus is spreading, and as per the title – what is possible???? Oh, and the man of the moment is Julian Assange, he’ll be featuring here quite possibly until Software Freedom Day 2010 is over – September 18, it’s a Saturday 11am-5pm. Get out your diary and write it in – we’re claiming you for that date!
